1. Association news
1.1 We welcome Microsoft as a sponsoring member of ALT, and the
University of Glasgow, and the Centre for Distance Education at the
University of London as new Organisational Members.
1.2 ALT Policy Board meeting – 18 June 2010, at LSE in London. The
Policy Board is a meeting for representative of our organisational and
sponsoring members.
* Theme: 'Technology in Learning and Teaching, an Enabler or a Tax?';
* Speakers include: Scott Anderberg, Director of eLearning Solutions,
Pearson eCollege; Professor Dame Wendy Hall, FRS FREng, Professor of
Computer Science at the University of Southampton, Professor Janet
Hartley, Pro-Director, Teaching and Learning, LSE; Sarah Jones, Chief
Executive of Ufi/learndirect; Terry Mayes, Emeritus Professor and past
Head of Academic Practice at Glasgow Caledonian University; Sir Tim

Ewart Wooldridge CBE, Chief Executive of the Leadership Foundation for
Higher Education.

1.3 CMALT Development Group formed
A new grouping of Certified Members of ALT, the CMALT Development Group
(CDG) has now been formed. Its founding members are Kirsten Thompson,
Dean Sheetz, and Tom Franklin. The CDG will take an active part in the
development of CMALT and in directing activities for the CMALT
community. The CDG can be contacted via [log in to unmask] . For more

1.4 The ALT Video in Education Special Interest Group (ViE SIG) was
established in February 2010. The remit of this SIG is to identify and
share up-to-date information and guidance on:
* institution-wide best practice for the management of digital
resources, and the integration with external electronic repositories;
* sound pedagogical principles in designing video materials for
educational purposes;
* guidance on issues concerning copyright and IPR, practical guidance on
addressing accessibility and usability criteria with reference to DDA.
The SIG officers are Phil Tubman (Lancaster University), Clive Young
(UCL) and John Conway (Imperial College London). The SIG’s wiki is at

1.5 Subscribing to ALT-ANNOUNCE - Staff of organisational and sponsoring
members, alongside individual members of ALT, are entitled to subscribe
to ALT-ANNOUNCE, the Jiscmail list we use to distribute this fortnightly
Digest, the quarterly ALT News, and infrequent brief announcements about
ALT. Please encourage relevant colleagues to subscribe from the simple
form at http://www.alt.ac.uk/lists.html. In the case of staff of
organisational and sponsoring members, provided the staff member joining
has an email address consistent with the domain name of an
organisational or sponsoring member of ALT, we will approve the
subscription, which will, essentially, result in the subscriber becoming
an Associate Member of ALT, which is free for employees of ALT
organisational and sponsoring members under the newly announced changes
to our membership structure. Later this year we will be migrating this
process to the new ALT web site and any subscribers whom we have treated
in this way will be able to opt out.
1.6 ALT Awards
1.6.1 Jorum Learning & Teaching Competition 2010.
This year the Jorum Learning & Teaching Competition will again run in
conjunction with ALT-C. The panel of judges will be looking for
exciting, innovative learning and teaching resources that have been
created under a Creative Commons licence to showcase at the conference.
The overall winners will be presented with their prizes during the
Wednesday Gala dinner on 8 September.

1.6.2 ALT/Epiguem Award for the Most Effective Use of Video 2010This
year the ALT/Epigeum video award will again run in conjunction with
ALT-C. The purpose of this award is to give credit to those
practitioners who are exploiting video to enhance learning. The overall
winners will be presented with their prizes during the Wednesday Gala
dinner on 8 September. For more details see

1.7 ALT sponsoring member Google's Engineering University Programme for
Europe, the Middle East, and Africa connects Google engineering with
students and academics ensuring that new and existing opportunities for

1.8 The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) has announced that
computer based assessments will be central to its revised qualification,
due to be launched in July 2010. The AAT has been using ALT sponsoring
member BTL’s Surpass e-Assessment solution to deliver exams for a while
now, whilst also offering the option of a paper based exam. See

1.9 On 16 June ALT sponsoring member Wimba will host an “online study
break” as part of the Higher Education Academy Information and Computer
Science Subject Centre’s ExAEF project. The ExAEF project, funded by the
HEA, is principally concerned with evaluating the role of formative

2.1 ALT/eLN free lunchtime webinar: *The Science of Learning* 22 June
2010, 12 midday. The purpose of this webinar will be to explore what we
really know about how people learn. What can we conclude from decades of
research into learning psychology and through more recent discoveries in
neuroscience? What are the implications of what we now know? What is
solid and dependable and what is mere 'pop psychology'?. Donald Clark
and Richard Cox will share their own views on this controversial topic
and provide you with the opportunity to join the debate. Clive Shepherd
will act as host for a discussion in which you are very welcome to

3.7 University of London Computer Centre (ULCC) and The Learning Edge
Europe have announced a partnership that will enable educational
institutions across the United Kingdom to access a securely hosted
EQUELLA/Moodle environment. EQUELLA is a digital repository for learning
objects, research and copyrighted materials; other uses include streamed
content, exam papers, media collections and theses. Read more at

4. Funding calls
4.1 JISC Grant 06/10: Higher Education Academy/JISC Open Educational
Resources Programme Phase 2. The Higher Education Academy and JISC
invites the submission of funding proposals for projects in the
following areas linked to Open Educational Resources:
* A(i): OER release meeting sector needs - projects committing to
release a substantial amount of content in the indicated areas.
£2,000,000 (one year projects of up to £250,000);
* A(iii): Cascade support in the release of OER - teams already
releasing OER sustainably working with one or more partners to support
those new to OER release. £525,000 (one year projects of up to £75,000);
* C(i): Collections of OER based around a thematic area - projects
identifying, collecting and promoting collections of OER and other
material around a common theme. £600,000 (1 year projects of up to
£75,000).
