JOB: Linguistic Statistician/Software Engineer

Laboratoire de Médiévistique Occidentale, Paris I
European Research Council project "Signs and States"
To be based at the CNRS campus, Villejuif

Salary: 1900 euros net per month

The Laboratoire de Médiévistique Occidentale of the University of
Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) (LaMOP - UMR 8589) is looking for an
experienced software engineer to develop a series of applications for
the treatment of lexical data and textual corpora for the use of
historians and linguists.

The candidate will work as part of the European project 'Signs and
States' (SAS) financed by the European Research Council from April
2010 to March 2014. The aim of the project is to study the cultural
transformations which permitted and influenced the development of the
modern State in Europe (from the 13th to the 17th century). In this
context, the candidate would be responsible for developing software
which will aid the homogenisation (e.g. correction of spelling
variation, lemmatisation and semi-automatic text flagging) of medieval
and modern texts (from the 10th to the 17th century). The resulting
software will have to be collaborative, so as to permit collective
work. It must operate in interface with applications which already
provide lexical analysis functions, such as Lexico 3 and Hyperbase,
and, at the level of output from these applications, with the R
interface.

The post will require a knowledge of XML, but also of appropriate
programming languages, such as Perl, Python, Java, etc. The candidate
will need to be familiar with the technology and techniques associated
with linguistic and statistical analysis.

Beyond the technical skills necessary for the development of this
software package, it will be expected that the candidate will take an
active and inventive role in defining the computing needs of the
project. Finally, the candidate must be able to assist with the
implementation of the necessary technical architecture, with the
coordination of the computing aspects of the project and with their
continuing development.

The candidate will be working in collaboration with a team of
historians and linguists with a knowledge of computer-based methods
who will be in constant dialogue with him or her. Good 'soft' skills
and the ability to work in a French-speaking environment will thus be
essential.

A renewable fixed term contract will be offered starting on 1 October
2010. The programme ends on 30 March 2014. The work will take place in
at the CNRS campus at Villejuif. Monthly salary: 1900 euros net.
Applications (CV and covering letter) should be sent to the contacts
specified below by 1 September 2010.
