An exciting opportunity has arisen for a quantitative researcher in the field of
malaria genetic epidemiology. Malaria is one of the leading causes of childhood
mortality worldwide, causing more than one million deaths per annum. The
MalariaGEN consortium (www.malariagen.net) is a partnership of research groups
in 21 countries, and is generating vast amounts of genetic data for
site-specific and global epidemiological studies. The proposed post will
support those partners in MalariaGEN (including those within the LSHTM) with
advanced data analysis and the preparation of any resulting scientific
publications. The postholder may be required to assist with genome-wide
analysis, as well as develop novel analysis tools for analysing genotyping and
sequencing data. There will be close interaction with researchers in the
Malaria Centre in the LSHTM (www.lshtm.ac.uk/malaria/), as well as the
MalariaGEN resource centre at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics
(Oxford) and Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (Hinxton).
The successful applicant will be exposed to genotyping and sequencing data, and
ideally will have a post graduate qualification (MSc, PhD) in Bioinformatics,
Epidemiology, or Mathematics / Statistics or another related discipline, with
some prior experience of the analysis of genetic data. They must be
self-motivating and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent computer skills are required, including experience of at least one of
C/C++, java, perl, R or another programming language.
The post is full-time and is available from 01/09/2010 until 31/08/2012, with
