I'd like to know what the UK government or the FA does to protect
players against blackmail and bribery.
With so many millions riding on bets these days wouldn't a footballer
be crazy to ignore threats that his family may have "an accident"?
Beckham had the advantage that he was too wealthy to bribe, and both
he and his family had already received so many threats they must have
excellent security (which they can afford).
How much is this true of others? I think the assumption that team
facilities won't be bugged, that team food and drink won't be
tainted, etc etc has already been shown to be false.
Of course it does take cojones to play 100% if you've been threatened
and security allows someone to just walk into your dressing room...
perhaps an illustration of just the risk they face.
The UK's weak economic position may have stopped us providing the
support that modern footballers, despite their huge pay cheques,
probably need. I think we need to start to provide real close
protection to all of them, probably long term, and start detailed
HMRC investigations of all of them and all of their families.
