Interesting you should say that, as it did look vaguely familar to me.
Could the orange be a faded section of red (it's hard to see from the
photograph)? If so, the Backing Britain campaign is a possibility.
I was wondering if it was an early SDP emblem or related to the
campaign to join (or not to join) the 'Common Market' in the early
1970's. Or possibly linked to the various devolution campaigns of the
same time.
The website:
http://momentsofc.wordpress.com/2009/08/10/political-symbols-and-colours-part-1-the-liberal-democrats/
has a link to an on-line discussion about changing political colours
over time and regional variations, which might help to shed some light
on it - especially if orange or gold has any particular links with
influential local families or businesses....
I don't know how recently orange stopped being associated with the
Netherlands - might it relate to some kind of political alliance with,
or support of, the Dutch during one of the World Wars?
Of course, these may all be red herrings and it is, in fact a pony club
or bull prize after all, but worth exploring the possibilities if you
have time.

Hi
Well, I think it is synthetic, so I guess as you say that narrows the
date range down a bit to about the mid to late 20th century?
It has probably been knocking around the store for decades!
A fellow SHCG list peep wonders if it might be connected to the short
lived 'I'm Backing Britain' campaign of early 1968. The campaign seems
to have used the Union flag as its inspiration, so I'm not sure about
the rosette being connected to it, as it is orange, white and blue
(with
a red centre) rather than just red, white and blue.
The inclusion of orange is throwing me a bit. Robert, if it was a
British Coronation or Jubilee, was orange ever used as one of the
official colours, within synthetic fibres / living memory time?!
I guess it could be political / campaign / anniversary / celebration
related, or maybe it could be an award of some kind, like you get for
horse racing / prize bulls etc etc? I think the former option(s) are
more likely?
We may never know...? I was just hoping that someone (helpfully) would
say, ahhhh, yes, I have one in my store too, and it is provenanced! No
such luck this time!
Thanks
Adam

Dear Adam -
I agree with George - can you tell if the ribbons are made from
synthetic fibres? This would help to pin down a date range.
Or - is it a very recent acquisition?
It would appear to include the colours of our new coalition
government.

Hello
I've got a rosette in the stores at my museum, which is
unaccessioned and I know nothing about.
Does anybody know what it might relate to, or have any useful
suggestions?
I initially thought possibly Suffragettes, but I think the
colours were quite different.
Many thanks!
Adam
