Teaching and academic administration activities in German (specialising
in German language and foreign language pedagogy)
DESCRIPTION:
The School of Languages, Literature, Culture and Communication is a
large and vibrant unit within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social
Sciences and plays a vital role in promoting quality research, teaching
and learning at the University of Limerick.
Faculty members in the German Section teach courses in German Studies to
undergraduates on a number of programmes to degree level (including the
BA in Applied Languages, BA in European Studies, BA (Joint Honours), BA
(Education) in Languages, and the Bachelor in Business Studies with
German. They are also involved in the delivery of the MA in Comparative
Literature and Cultural Studies and the Graduate Diploma in Education
(Languages), as well as supervising research students to Masters and PhD
level.
The School is now seeking to recruit a Teaching Assistant in German,
specialising in German language and foreign language pedagogy. This post
is for a ten-month period from 1 September 2010 to 30 June 2011, to
cover sabbatical leave.
Candidates will have:
• a relevant undergraduate degree
• a relevant postgraduate qualification (preferably a PhD)
• experience of relevant undergraduate teaching in HE
• research experience, reflected in activities such as conference
papers and/or publications
Research and/or teaching interests in the following areas will be an
advantage:
• German to English translation and interpreting
• Foreign language pedagogy (including German as a Foreign Language)
Experience of academic administration and teaching through German will
also be an advantage.
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a variety of
undergraduate teaching in German, including language, translation, and
bilateral interpreting. The candidate will also teach aspects of the
language pedagogy modules offered to undergraduate and postgraduate
language education students.
The appointee will be expected to undertake such duties as are directed
and required by the Head of School.
The position is tenable for 10 months from 1 September 2010.
Salary: €30,961 pro rata.
