The question of Byzantium is quite peculiar of the shortage in our
classification systems. For me it was a surprise that there was not a
specific notation. Yes, the transition between ancient and modern
times is not well considered in DDC or in UDC, yet in the Swedish
classification system SAB.

But on the propositions appearing in the list I should not like to
place Byzantium in Asia. Byzantine art is considered as a continuation
of the Greek art, and the same thing should be in history and
archeology. History does not follow the physical-geographical borders
of today.

I also think that when we use time auxiliaries we should use the same
kind of notation before and after slash. I know that there are a lot
of examples when we can find year in one side of the slash and decade
in the other, but this practice is confusing. "033/1453" could be
interpreted as "0033/1453" where the user can beliveve that the
classifier has forgotten a digit. Why not "033/145", or "03/14"?

My suggestion for Byzantine archaeology is 902(495)"033/145" or
902(4)"03/14" as a shorter and more including notation.

Regards

Miguel Benito
