WHY ANTIDRUG CAMPAIGNS CAN HAVE THE REVERSE IMPACT
The most effective anti-drug ads for teenagers show the targeted drug and mount strong arguments
against its use. Sounds plausible, but this US study found that when it comes to cannabis and the
youngsters most likely to use it, the reverse was the case.

LIMITED IMPACTS IN SEVEN-NATION EUROPEAN DRUG EDUCATION TRIAL
After the disappointment of the English Blueprint trial come results from a major European drug
education trial. EU-Dap probably registered some real successes, but these were few and small and
may have been artefacts of the implementation and analysis of the study.

ASK HEAVY DRINKERS TO MAKE PLANS TO DRINK LESS ... AND THEY DO!
All this British study did was ask people out shopping, working or relaxing to complete a brief
written survey about their drinking which ended with an injunction to make concrete plans to drink
safely. A month later heavy drinkers had on average significantly cut back.

BEST EVIDENCE YET FOR WEB-BASED ALCOHOL SELF-HELP
Combining a randomised trial with a real-world test, studies of the Dutch Drinking Less programme
have gone further than any others to establish the beneficial impacts of web-based alcohol self-help
interventions.
