Position for the Ph.D.-level Laboratory Director of the
Single Molecule Analysis in Real-Time (SMART) Center
at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Starting immediately, the newly formed Single Molecule Analysis in Real-Time
(SMART) Center at the University of Michigan is seeking to fill the position of
the Ph.D.-level SMART Center Laboratory Director. The Lab Director will be in
the exciting position to build and develop three cutting-edge single molecule
fluorescence microscopes under the auspices of a recently awarded $1.7 Million
NSF Major Research Instrumentation Development grant and the mentorship of a
10-member steering committee. The SMART Center is planned as an open-access
facility on the University of Michigan's central campus in beautiful and
vibrant Ann Arbor, MI, with the goal to attract users in the physical and
biological sciences as well as engineering from across the university and
beyond. A recent example for the type of exciting interdisciplinary research
to be conducted in the Center is found in Nature 465 (2010) 206-210. The Lab
Director will train students and post-docs in the use of the new
instrumentation, manage the SMART Center user base, participate in a variety of
collaborative research opportunities, and be involved in outreach activities in
conjunction with existing University programs to scientists, high school
students, and the public at large. Highly motivated and enthusiastic
candidates are sought with a Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience in single
molecule fluorescence microscopy and/or laser spectroscopy, interfacing of
software with optical and electronic equipment, a strong interest to learn
biochemical and cell biological techniques, and the interpersonal skills to
interact with a large and diverse user base. The salary will be very
competitive, commensurate with that at National Labs ($55,000-$65,000,
depending on level of experience), and will include health care coverage by the
university. More information on the SMART Center can be found at
http://singlemolecule.lsa.umich.edu.
