What's in this issue?
National Piping Centre: James Beaton, librarian at the National Piping Centre, discusses the challenges faced by the service and looks forward to the exciting opportunities the service has ahead.
He describes how the library service has grown over the years to the stage where it is now considered central to, not only preservation, but also teaching and learning at the centre.
In order to support this, the piping centre is developing its online presence. This, and collaboration with other similar services, gives hope for the future of the service, in terms of the opportunities that the changes offer the National Piping Centre.
Glasgow Women's Library is on the move!: Librarian at the Glasgow Women's Library, Laura McVean, describes the trials and tribulations of moving a large and growing library service around a major city.
The Glasgow Women's Library, opened in 1991 has grown over the years, almost entirely through the generosity of the public and institutions. In this time, it has moved twice and is set to do so again.
Laura McVean charts the growth of the service and describes how it serves the wider community beyond providing a repository for documents and objects relating to women's history.
Challenges for Academic Libraries: Sarah Gentleman, Communications Officer with the Research Information Network, discusses how the current tough economic climate will affect Scottish academic libraries.
The research undertaken by RIN has demonstrated the essential role played by libraries in universities in supporting the mission of universities. They believe that libraries are essential to the sharing of knowledge and that they are an effective and efficient way of delivering value to both staff and students.
Chris Pinder, CILIPS president 2010, provides a response to the article, outlining what he believes can be done to mitigate the challenges that are faced in the academic library sector.
Relaxed But Purposeful:
Moray College has recently undergone an HMIe inspection.
Angie MacKenzie, Learning Resource Centre Officer at Moray College, describes how they prepared for this using, amongst other things, the SLIC FE evaluation toolkit.
This article is essntial reading to anybody about to undergo HMIe inspection. Despite some initial trepidation from staff at Moray College, the experience proved to be a positive one, as HMIe have grown to recognise the central role played by library and information services in further education.
