A Cardiff University sciSCREEN event: THE HURT LOCKER
Chapter Arts Centre, Market Road, Canton, Cardiff CF5 1QE
THURSDAY 27th MAY, 6pm
Directed by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker follows the members of an elite US
bomb-disposal team. This screening will include an opportunity for discussion and debate. The film
will be introduced by academics from Cardiff University. After the film there will be a wine
reception and a panel discussion involving a former military psychiatrist, a philosopher, a naval
officer, a historian of ’shell shock’, and an expert on representations of war. The discussion
will use this film to explore the realities of contemporary military work and the stresses of danger
and the unknown. Themes covered will include the psychological impact of conflict, the allure of war
and the boundaries between bravery and recklessness.
