Dear List,
I have been carrying out extensive research into the Welsh side of my wife's family tree, who came, mostly from Anglesey and North Devon.
One ancestor has already been identified as a copper miner at Parys Mountain Mine, Anglesey, and we have now identified 3 generations of her family who worked at Drws y Coed Mine at Beddgelert - one as a blacksmith and five who were copper miners. We have noted that on the 1871 census, one of her female ancestors was described as 'parish pauper' and another as an 'engine stoker' which appears an unusual occupation for a woman.
Whilst there is much on the Net as to the history and workings of this mine, there appears to be little on the social history of the inhabitants and miners who lived in the hamlet of Drws y Coed.
Can anyone point me in a direction where such information can be found?
Kind regards,
Trevor
