"Social and political uses of the cuckold in visual culture"
Organized by Christiane Andersson (Bucknell University) & Sara
Matthews-Grieco (Syracuse University in Florence) in collaboration with
Elissa Weaver(University of Chicago)RSA Discipline Representative for Gender.
Although the iconographic use of the cuckold is a recurring theme in
European visual culture, it has received far less attention than its
contemporary manifestations in theater and literature. Yet there seem to
be specific moments and contexts in which this subject enjoys a particular
success in visual media. From the classical triangle of Vulcan-Venus-Mars
to the satirical Confraternity of Cuckolds, are there historical
circumstances that make adultery into a rhetorical tool for social and
political commentary?
