Following the award of an extended programme of three AHRC Collaborative
PhD Studentships on the the theme of 'The Child and the World', Queen
Mary, University of London, in partnership with the V&A Museum of
Childhood, invites applications for the first doctoral studentship
commencing on 1 October 2010.
This three-year doctoral studentship is on ‘Children, home and empire
c.1870 to 1950’ and will examine the ways in which children living in
Britain engaged with the idea of empire through their everyday lives and
leisure activities in the home. While scholars have examined the role of
formal education and learning (e.g. Ploszajska, 1999) and children’s
literature (e.g. Phillips, 1997) in shaping children’s geographical
imaginations and understandings of empire, relatively little work has
considered the importance of material culture in moulding young people’s
knowledge of the wider world. Drawing upon the collections of the V&A
Museum of Childhood, the project will utilise toys, games, dolls
furniture, clothing and other objects to explore representations of
empire in the rich material culture of childhood.
The award pays fees and an annual maintenance grant. For further
details, please go to:

The closing date is Friday 4 June 2010. It is anticipated that
interviews with short-listed candidates will be held on Monday 21 June
2010. Please note that usual AHRC eligibility rules apply to these
studentships, see:
