Hello all,
This course looks brilliant. I'm a bit gutted because I've checked and unfortunately I can't get up to Newcastle and back in one day from here. Does anyone know of a similar course being offered closer to Bournemouth?
Many thanks,
Caroline

An Introduction to online Literature Searching
At the Sowerby Centre for Health Informatics at Newcastle
Thursday 30th September 2010 1:00pm - 5pm
This half day course is ideal for any Information Scientists/Librarians working in the health sector who are new to literature searching, as well as other health professionals (including pharmacists) who have an interest in improving their research skills.
By the end of this course participants should have a greater understanding of the following;
* Formulating a search question and identifying the key concepts, search terms and synonyms to develop an effective search strategy for your topic of research
* Using appropriate bibliographic databases with a focus on Ovid Medline
* Using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and keyword/free text searching as well as using 'operators' to combine and limit your search results
* Using search filters to limit your search results e.g. identifying systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials etc.
* Printing and saving search results, sending your results to reference management software, emailing search results and saving your search to re-run at a later date.
* Searching the 'invisible web' using Google to identify material which is not easily found by conventional means, such as through publishers and bibliographic databases.
* Using Ovid Medline with a practical hands-on literature searching workshop, utilising the skills discussed.
