Dear All,
I have just received the following from the Royal Astronomical Society.
I couldn't get the URL to work, but the form is available on the
RAS front page at www.ras.org.uk. Note the tight deadline (13th May)!
Sheila Peacock, list co-owner.
‘2010 RAS FELLOWSHIPS’
In response to the reduction of Research Council awards, the Royal
Astronomical Society (RAS) will award 3 (initially) new Fellowships
(the ‘2010 RAS Fellowships’) to help outstanding early career
scientists in the UK ie people who completed their PhD (or equivalent)
no more than 5 years before 1st October 2010. It is hoped to make further
awards in future years. These awards will be in addition to the
’ RAS Daphne Jackson Fellowship’ and the ‘RAS Sir Norman Lockyer Fellowship’.
1. Purpose
The purpose of the ‘2010 RAS Fellowships’ is to enable outstanding
candidates to pursue research in the UK in the disciplines that the
RAS advances (astronomy, solar-system science, geophysics and closely
related branches of these sciences). The research topic must be acceptable
by the selection panel set up by the Council of the RAS (the Trustees of
the Society).
2. Eligibility
Any person of whatever nationality, holding a doctorate (or equivalent)
from a recognized institution of higher education awarded no more than
FIVE ( 5) years before 1st October 2010 and who is ‘ordinarily resident’
in the UK ( see below) may apply for a Fellowship.
3. Period of award and Starting Date
The Fellowships will be awarded for a period of three years, beginning on
1st October 2010 (or within 6 months thereafter).
4. Value of award and payment
The award, in the form of a grant to the institution at which the fellow
is based, will be calculated from the non-clinical academic research
(RA1A) salary scale common to universities in the UK, taking into
account the age of the candidate and incorporating annual increments.
A further £2,000 per annum may be claimed for costs incurred in
attending meetings and conferences or for other items related
to the research. In addition, the RAS will meet the cost of
Employers National Insurance contributions and make an additional
payment, where appropriate, to a Fellow’s personal pension plan.
Note: The RAS will fund only directly incurred costs, and not
overheads (including bench fees or ‘Full Economic Costing’).
Applications will need to be certified by an authorised person
at the institution at which the fellowship will be held confirming
acceptance of this condition
5. Selection criteria and application process
Eligible applicants who fulfil the conditions specified in these notes
will be selected on their capability, achievement and promise and their
proposed research. It is essential that Section 14 of the application
form is completed by the Department Head, and countersigned by the
Administrative Officer, of the department/establishment at which it
is proposed to hold the fellowship. Please note that references should
be submitted directly to the RAS.
References and Applications, including the list of publications and the
proposed research report (see details on the form which can be downloaded
at http://tiny.cc/nnk8s ) should be received by the Executive Secretary,
Royal Astronomical Society, Burlington House, London W1J 0BQ by 17:00 on
13th May 2010.
It is hoped to make offers in July 2010
