The Faculties of Social Sciences and Geosciences at the Goethe University Frankfurt invite applications for
4 PhD Positions in the new interdisciplinary research group
“Re-Ordering of the Urban in the Age of Neoliberalism”
(EG 13 TV-G-U, half-time; subject to final approval by the German Research Foundation)
for a period of 2 or 3 years (depending on the project; see below) starting in August 2010.
The research group will examine new strategies and programs of urban governance with a special focus on global-local-interdependencies. Two research questions form the common ground for all projects: 1) How is the re-ordering of the urban being shaped in discourses, strategies and practices and which local consequences accompany the forming of new policies and instruments? 2) In which way do local processes draw on globally available patterns, models and blueprints, and how do local settings influence and modify the modeling and implementation of new urban policies?
The successful candidates are expected to independently organize and carry out fieldwork, analyze and document the results, and contribute actively to the research group. The four positions are designated for the following projects:
Project 1: Creative Politics – The Emergence of a New Field of Urban Governance? (36 months; Prof Berndt: [log in to unmask]; Prof Lindner: [log in to unmask])
Project 2: Policing American Style in Frankfurt? The Influence of International Policing Strategies on Local Politics of Crime (36 months; Prof Belina: [log in to unmask])
Project 3: Reshaping of Urban Administrations: New Public Management in the Administration of Public Real Estate in Frankfurt (Main) and Berlin (36 months; Prof Heeg: [log in to unmask])
Project 4: Open for new ideas – we invite candidates to design their own project within the framework of our general theme “Re-Ordering of the Urban in the Age of Neoliberalism”. Proposals of 3-5 pages should include the research question as well as a research design for the fieldwork in Frankfurt and possibly Berlin (24-36 months; Prof Pütz: [log in to unmask])
Candidates should be in possession of a Master’s degree or equivalent in a pertinent social science discipline such as (but not limited to) Human Geography, Sociology, Anthropology or Political Science. Command of German and English is required. Further information on the projects in German can be found at http://www.geostud.de/beruf-qualifikation/tipps-fuer-praktikum-und-beruf/jobs/aktuelle-jobs/
Questions are most welcome and should be addressed directly to the project responsible (see above).
Applications should include a cover letter (800-1000 words) briefly laying out your motivation for the position and your experience in conducting empirical research. They should further include your CV, copies of relevant degrees and certificates, a sample (draft) publication of chapter of your thesis (not more than 10.000 words), and the contact details of two referees.
Please send your applications on one pdf-file to the Head of Department of Human Geography and indicate which of the projects you are applying for:
