Manu has circulated a first draft of a new document called HTML5 Profiles on behalf of the W3C HTML WG
http://dev.w3.org/html5/profiles/drafts/ED-html5-profiles-20100522/
to address the question of the general concept of the profile in HTML5.
See Manu's message to the public-html list here
http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html/2010May/0378.html
where he highlights its three principal contributions:
* Generalizes the profile attribute to all elements for scoped indication of vocabularies and metadata processing rules.
* Provides a more thorough and rigorous definition of the profile attribute for languages that include the attribute.
* Provides errata for the profile attribute in HTML4 that brings it in-line with current usage in Microformats, GRDDL and RDFa.
I haven't had time to read it properly yet, but I guess we need to check it meets our requirements (which I think it does) and make any comments as appropriate.
