Final Call: fully-funded places available on second seminar of ESRC seminar-series ‘The Socio-Politics of Biosecurity’
Seminar two: The Science of Biosecurity
Keele University, Thursday 3 and Friday 4 June 2010
http://www.keele.ac.uk/biosecurity/biosecuring-science.htm
The second seminar in the series ‘The science of biosecurity and biosecuring science’ will draw upon historical and contemporary issues related to the management of non-native species in the UK. With contributions from leading practitioners and academics, we will invite discussion of language and definition, the suitability of classification criteria, the pragmatic justifications for nativist policies, as well as the ideological assumptions and cultural motivations, including the degree to which the 'native good, aliens bad' discourse is a barrier to ethnic minority participation in environmental conservation.
Currently confirmed speakers:
Dr Keith Kirby, Natural England
Dr Niall Moore, Non-native Species Secretariat
Dr Dick Shaw, CAB International and Japanese Knotweed Alliance
Dr Sarah Taylor, Keele University
Dr Isobel Tomlinson, Soil Association
Judy Ling Wong CBE, Black Environment Network
Through two themed sessions, 'The native/alien paradigm' and 'Interrogating nativism', we will draw together aspects of the nativism debate from different disciplinary perspectives and consider how it relates to biosecurity practice, with the aim of engendering fertile discussion and debate.
All places from UK are fully funded (travel, accommodation), with UK-based expenses for non-UK attendees. There is also the option to join the conference via a live link for those unable to attend in person.
If you are interested in attending this seminar, or for any other enquiries related to the seminar series, please get in touch with Sarah Taylor [log in to unmask], Kezia Barker [log in to unmask] or Andrew Dobson [log in to unmask]
