Some areas of the country will have mine shafts and wells other than coal shafts
In Cheshire and other salt areas shafts and wells for rock salt and brine extraction have very different configurations and modes of failure, with the solubility of rock salt in beds and the movement of water down shafts and across rock head being interesting.
Salt mining or brine extraction is known in the midlands and in Lancashire and under the north sea.
The former Cheshire county Council and the Cheshire brine compensation Board have technical information on mine failures and shaft/well locations passed onto their successor councils and the Coal Authority. Local companies ICI and Brunner Mond have extensive historical records as well.
