Hi All,
Just wanted to welcome new joiners - Melanie from Greenwich and Fay from Salford. Also Yana who we omitted previously (sorry!)- also from Greenwich, and Richard from York College.
There are now 24 members of this new forum.
Ten of these form the Planning Group for CHESS, and I am currently Convenor (this mostly just means that people have a name to contact). We'll try to keep you informed if we are planning events or activities that you can join. At the moment we have just welcomed new Planning Group members, and we are trying to get ourselves more organised, while all have very busy jobs.
But please all do post questions, comments, thoughts to CHESSForum. This is a resource for us all - do use it.
These are the aims of CHESS:
The Consortium of Higher Education Support Services with Deaf Students (CHESS)
THE MISSION STATEMENT
"To increase choice, access and quality of provision for deaf and hard of hearing students entering and undergoing Higher Education."
AIMS
a) To disseminate and promote research into, good practice
b) To support all Higher Education Institutions in developing good practice
OBJECTIVES
CHESS should:
* have a cross-institutional Planning Group with a Convenor to co-ordinate and organise the work of CHESS.
* hold meetings open to all, to develop sector expertise on supporting d/Deaf students in HE.
* respond to requests for the discussion of issues.
* disseminate information e.g. minutes of meetings; sector developments through a mail-base list.
* consult with the list and other interested groups to provide responses to issues relating to the Mission Statement.
I think it would be really great, as someone has just suggested, to send some kind of introduction to the rest of the list members.
I'll start - I've been involved in Deaf education for quite a few years now - from primary through to higher education and lifelong learning sectors. I'm also an interpreter. But my main job now is at the University of Leeds, as a disability advisor specialising in access for Deaf and hard of students, and managing about 30 note-takers, as well as generic 'disability work'.
Best wishes,
Sheenagh
