Exploring Augmented Reading Practices and Paper Interfaces in the ubiquitous computing age PaperComp 2010, 1st International Workshop on Paper Computing Held at Ubicomp 2010 / 26-29 Sept 2010 / Copenhagen, Denmark Deadline for short papers (4 pages) or abstracts (1 page) is June 25.

Online at http://www.papercomp.org/

CALL FOR PAPER

Paper is not dead. Books, magazines and other printed materials can now be connected to the digital world, enriched with additional content and even transformed into interactive interfaces. Conversely, some of the screen-based interfaces we currently use to interact with digital data could benefit from being paper-based or make use of specially designed material as light and flexible as paper. In a near future, printed documents could become new ubiquitous interfaces in our everyday interaction with digital information. This is the dawn of paper computing.

This workshop aims at bringing together researchers exploring the future of printed interfaces and associated practices. It will act as a kick-off event for launching a new research community, articulating how different research lines form a coherent emerging field. The proceedings of the workshop ambition to gather the visions of the most active researchers working on augmented reading practices and paper interfaces. Selected authors will be invited to contribute to a seminal book entitled “Paper Computing” that will be published in 2011. Both the content and the innovative format of this book will act as an exemplary illustration of the potential of paper computing.

THEMES

Submissions are welcome regarding all aspects of the subject of print in the digital age, including (but not limited to):

* Technology for digitally enhancing paper document and linking digital information and paper interfaces: Fiducial markers, Barcodes (1D and 2D), cover recognition, page recognition, pen-based recognition. Methods for enriching existing paper documents with text comments, video, images and sounds inputs.

* Paper-based interfaces. Augmented paper interfaces using camera- projector system and other interactive lights equipment. Combination of tangible and paper computing.

* Paper-like interfaces. Specially designed material which should ideally be as light and flexible as paper. Paper-like interfaces based on flexible display technology. Paper with embedded electronics.

* Studies about products and prototypes using digitally enhancing paper document, paper-based and paper-like interfaces. Design of new reading devices and interfaces. Ergonomic aspects of paper computing.

* Studies about interactive books, magazines, newspapers, guides, children’s book, flyers, cards, etc and associated new interaction practices. Studies comparing printed and display interfaces and

associated reading practices. Continuous reading practices over

different interfaces (smartphone, tablet, paper, etc.). Geo- localization of reading activities.

* Mobile devices and paper computing.

* Print on Demand technology for Paper Computing.

* Databases and Cloud computing infrastructure supporting paper computing

* Studies of particular application areas of paper computing including but not limited to : games and home entertainment, pedagogical applications, marketing, hospitality, healthcare, tourism, etc.

* Implication for scientific publishing, peer-reviewing process, access to scientific information.

* Economic models of paper computing. Implications for libraries and bookstores.

* Historical studies about the evolution of printed and paper-based interfaces

* Privacy issues

SUBMISSION INFORMATION

Papercomp2010 will accept paper submissions in two categories: Paper (up to 4 pages) and abstract (1 page)

Accepted papers will have oral presentations at the workshop. Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters, videos or interactive demonstrations. Authors of accepted abstracts will also have the opportunity to make a brief oral presentation during a Poster Spotlight session. Authors of selected papers, abstracts, videos and demonstration will be invited to contribute to a follow-up book on “Paper Computing”.

All submissions and camera-ready papers and abstracts should be sent as email attachments in PDF format (only) to: [log in to unmask]

Formating templates can be downloaded from the following webpage :

http://www.ubicomp2010.org/templates
