skype menus at the clients home yesterday, but could see anything.

No, it's not SMS but it is like it. A message link is set up between two
parties so unlike SMS you don't have to address each message, you can
set up a text conversation which is independent of the video call but
can be in parallel with it.
Difficult to describe but easy to do.
