Applications Now Open for Moving Image Preservation Audit Visits
Opportunity for London organisations with moving image holdings to receive specialist advice from moving image conservators
As part of the Revitalising the Regions programme, Film London, representing London’s Screen Archives: the regional network, is offering a programme of Moving Image Preservation Audit Visits (MI PAVs) to deliver expert collection preservation advice to London museums, archives and libraries holding archival moving image material, but having no specialist film or video conservation expertise.
The programme will help museums, archives and libraries develop the skills to
• plan for the preservation of their moving image collections
• prioritise tasks for action
• undertake basic collection care procedures
• advocate and fundraise to support preservation
The MI PAVs are carried out by specialist consultants who spend one or two days on site visiting all storage and display areas and looking at aspects such as environmental monitoring and management, packaging materials and storage systems, maintenance, access procedures, physical and security risks. The consultants support staff responsible for managing collections to identify and prioritise for action any physical threats or ways of working that might be putting the preservation of their collections at risk. They discuss with staff all the activities that might impinge on preservation and strategies for collections management. The consultants then provide a succinct, but comprehensive written report with prioritised recommendations backed up by guidance on best practice and advice on sources of supplies and services.
The application and guidance notes for the MI PAVs are available to download at www.filmlondon.org.uk/screenarchives. Applications will be accepted at any time until October or until funds are exhausted, whichever is sooner. The MI PAVs will take place between May and October 2010.
