PhD Studentships in Statistics (3)
The Department of Statistics is one of the largest in the UK and
our research has a high international profile. We currently have
over 20 postgraduate students (PhD and MSc), and are delighted to
be able to offer three funded PhD places to join this highly
active community.
1. A CASE studentship, funded by EPSRC under the Knowledge
Transfer Network, is available in the Design and Analysis of Clinical
Trials in Pharmacogenetics. This will be jointly supervised by
Prof Stephen Senn (Department of Statistics, Glasgow) and Dr Vladimir
Anisimov (Research Statistics Unit, GlaxoSmithKline). Spectacular
advances in molecular genetics, gene sequencing and genotyping over the
last few decades have raised the hope that clinical investigations of
pharmaceutical remedies for disease can be made more efficient and more
effective by targeting subgroups of patients that have the greatest
ability to respond to treatment. However, there are many ways of
subgrouping patients, random variability is high, is affected by the
type of randomization, stratification level and recruitment scheme
and in consequence developing promising targeted therapies has been
difficult. In this project, approaches to designing drug development
programmes and clinical trials capable of efficiently resolving
components of variation and effectively identifying gene by treatment
interactions will be developed. The successful candidate will have a
first degree in a quantitative subject such as statistics. Some knowledge
of genetics will be an advantage. There is a stipend enhancement of
4000 pounds above the usual EPSRC rate.
2. A further studentship is funded by EPSRC and can be held in any
topic of the Department's research strengths, namely Bayesian modelling,
biostatistics, clinical trial design, clustering, environmetrics,
shape analysis, forensic statistics and genetics.
3. A research student/teaching assistant position is available for a
four year period. The successful candidate will study for a PhD in
any area of the Department's interests but will also be involved in
some teaching duties. There is a stipend enhancement of 3000 pounds
above the usual EPSRC rate.
