A corpse is dragged into the biggest hall.
Someone shivers a tambourine. A bell
is struck repeatedly irregularly.
A muffled drum is banged.
Poor sandwiches
are consumed while the body is disembowelled
and quartered with inadequate cutlery.
At the height of it, a strong wire barrier
is rattled down to keep back excitement.
“I can’t see what anybody’s doing.”
shouts an old man, grumpily, much aggrieved.
Children laugh, playing among the fixed seating.
Lights flicker and more candles are demanded.
Harsh percussive music, and some dancing
of aggressive style, conclude the ceremonies.
