Of course, as Zizek mentions, Tarkovsky took off, in Stalker, from the
Strugatski's Roadside Picnic. a novel more conventionally Sf, in which
it was the fact that aliens had left their trash behind & humanity
kept looking for new tek in it that counted as much as the
metaphysical presence of the stalkers...
