Hi Pam
Karen's answer neatly sums up the difficulties with manual evacuation
chairs. You can get around most of the handling/lifting/dignity issues with
the powered evacuation chairs. These allow the wheelchair user to remain in
their own chair. They generally accommodate users of both manual
wheelchairs and powered wheelchairs.
The major downside of the powered evac chairs is the cost - between €3k and
€12k here in Ireland depending on the model and capabilities from what I've
seen.
Best regards

Has anyone got experience of evac chairs being used by people with mobility
impairments in a real life evacuation?
There seems to be an assumption that people with mobility impairments can
get themselves into an evac chair, or that they would be lifted in. It
seems that evac chair training is done with non-disabled people who can get
themselves in and out, and can break their fall with their legs if they are
tipped out of the evac chair.
Do those who have had evac chair training also have training in lifting
people?
Pam
