---------------

Having taken over a collection where SHIC had not been used for some
time, or consistently, I can fully endorse its usefulness.

Like any classification system, it has its weaknesses, but I have to
say I've not come across a better system.

Regards

---------------

Yes SHIC is in use here in Norfolk both for social history
collections and library books. Agree that it isn't ideal for books,
but the benefits of having everything on one system outweigh
difficulties. Have discovered disfficulties when SHIC has been
applied retrospectively to objects. One needs a clear provenance to
know which category to assign - one example a hat was 3 for personal
adornment, then put to 4 for working life, then finally assigned 1
when it was noted that it was donatedf by local drama group as one of

their props.
