RECENT SUICIDE ATTEMPT STRONG INDICATOR FOR RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT
In this US study most patients benefited to roughly the same degree from residential and
non-residential treatment, but those who had recently attempted suicide responded dramatically
better to residential programmes, ending up with less severe substance use problems than other
patients.

HARM REDUCTION LESSONS ON SMOKING IMPROVE ON ABSTINENCE-BASED EDUCATION
Despite the comparator being an innovative skills-based curriculum, half as many pupils in 30
Australian secondary schools became regular smokers if instead the lessons had been based on harm
reduction principles.

LOW THRESHOLD METHADONE EXTENDS LIFE EXPECTANCY IN BARCELONA
Largely due to the expansion of low threshold methadone maintenance programmes, over the '90s the
life expectancy of heroin users entering treatment in Barcelona increased by 21 years. Protecting
against overdose was the main way methadone saved lives.

STARTING METHADONE PRESCRIBING IN PRISON PROMOTES CONTINUATION ON RELEASE
From Baltimore a study which shows that offering substitution treatment in prison to inmates whose
offending was driven by opiate dependence means they are much more likely to continue treatment on
release, helping sustain the benefits of prison programmes and cut crime.
