Hi all,
I live in central London, about 5 mins walking from where the conference venue was. If anyone urgently needs a place to stay for a few days, they are more than welcome to stay with me. Space at my flat is limited, so I can't accommodate everyone, but there is a large sofa bed, and small futon.
Contact me directly if you're in need!

Subject: Surveillance Studies Scholars Stranded in London!
Dear all,
Please forward to others who attended the conference.
Great to see many of you at the Global Surveillance Society conference: Now European air space has been completely closed many of you cannot get home and various stories and plans are emerging. Ann Rudinow Saetan and Heidi Lomell have just told be of their plans. Im sure there other other stories to swap. But some mutual aid and support might be necessary as well, so post stories, requests for advice and useful information here.
We should perhaps offer a prize for the most interesting account of the return trip with appoprapriate surveillance references of course!!.
Good luck to you all and if anyone needs help or advice please email me and i will try and help out.
The BBC reported today that under European law your Airline is responsible for your welfare if they cancel your flights - so keep reciepts etc and let them pick up the tab!.

I doubt many can afford to take the option favoured by John Cleese which has just been reported by the british media.
Monty Python comedian John Cleese looked on the
bright side of life and opted for a daylong cab ride halfway across
Europe after the dust plume from an Icelandic volcano left the British
actor stranded in Oslo.
Cleese paid $5,100 for a Mercedes taxi to Brussels today, said Kjetil
Kristoffersen, the managing director of Publicom AS, his agent in
Norway. Cleese had visited the Norwegian capital to participate in the
talk show "Skavlan." The cab driver who agreed to the 1,500-kilometer
(932-miles) tour is a childhood friend of Kristoffersen, the agent said.

but we've decided to try to make it home. It looks as though the car rentals in Calais are closed from Saturday noon til Monday morning, so we've booked a car from opening time Monday. Today we simply enjoy (as much as we can relax into it) another day in London. Tomorrow we take off straight after breakfast, head for Dover, and take the first ferry we can get onto (they're not accepting bookings now, but it seems they are getting people across on a first come first served basis). Then we'll see. If the car hire offices have decided to open on Sunday in the spirit of the emergency, then we'll see if we can pick up our car and get going. If not, then we find a hotel room and wait take off as booked Monday morning. It's about a 10-hour drive from there to Copenhagen. We'll alternate driving and napping/navigating and should be in Copenhagen either Sunday or Monday night, depending on the car hire office hours. From there it's about a 7-hour drive to Oslo, and from Oslo another 8 hours either by train or driving to Trondheim. I'll take the train if tickets are available (there are horror stories in the news this morning of stuffed suits fighting with knives for seats, but hopefully all the overstressed business folks will be safely home by the time I get to the station). Otherwise I'll split the drive into two sections. I have friends I can visit at the halfway point. All in all, Heidi should be home by Tuesday evening at the latest, and I by Thursday afternoon. Whew! It will be an adventure to be remembered once it's over. And we count ourselves lucky that we're only inconvenienced. The poor Icelanders may have worse to come if Katla mountain blows. Geological evidence is that it always has blown in concert with the one erupting now, but there's no sign so far of Katla erupting this time. We have our fingers crossed for the Icelanders.
