Hi Jonathan,
the usual reason for this problem is a broken local network. Make sure
that the address "localhost" is recognised (try "ping localhost") and that
your loopback device is working, "netstat -i" should show an "lo" device.
If that's all OK try running some simple detached tasks in ICL:
% icl
icl > kappa
icl > stats
If that's OK, try out the AUTOASTROM task of PHOTOM:
% photom
% autophotom
(just respond to any prompts with !!, we're testing if things are working
at a fundamental level). Report or fix up any problems that you see.
Failing all this send me (gzip this and don't CC to the list, it is very
big) the GaiaDebug.log produced by running gaia:
gaia -debuglog 1
and reproducing the problem.
