Dear Snoms members and other interested parties (please circulate),
Snoms will be holding a workshop on Modernism and Music on Saturday, May 29th, at The University of Aberdeen. The topic can be liberally interpreted as the purpose of the workshop is to stimulate a productive discussion among participants across disciplines (English, Modern Languages, Music, Cognitive Science, Auditory Culture,etc.). As a workshop, rather than a conference, we also hope to encourage people to speak about works in progress, to test ideas, etc., rather than to present perfectly polished papers. There will be a 20 minute maximum on papers, but no minimum, so if you are just getting something off the ground, you should feel free to present a shorter, more rough outline of the work in progress.
Kicking off the workshop will be David Evans (St. Andrews), on "Communication Breakdown:
Debussy, Banville and the Problem with Serenades". Other participants will be speaking on topics that range from the literary comparative ('Wagner and Joyce,' 'Beckett, Serialism, and Auditory Space', 'Celan, Carson and the Art of the Fugue') to the theoretical/practical ('Sonic Detritus in contemporary music,' 'Noise and the avant-garde'). Esteemed colleagues from the music departments of Aberdeen and Glasgow will also be present to offer critical insight into modernism and music.
If interested in participating, please contact Adrienne Janus ([log in to unmask]).
