Introducing Twitter as a professional development tool

Format: Training session involving a number of practical activities and trainer input.
Duration: Half day 9.30 – 12.30pm (registration and coffee from 9.30am)
Session Leader: Gillian Hanlon (SLIC) Gillian is responsible for developing Web2.0 services within SLIC/CILIPS and is leading the creation of national guidelines to support the adoption of new technologies by Scottish library services.

What is this training session about? It’s about learning how to make use of microblogging for professional communication and collaboration. This technology allows remote participation in professional development events and conferences, helps users stay engaged with the library community, give and receive real time feedback, create personal learning networks and learn ‘on the fly’. Twitter may also be used as an innovative service development tool and this will be explored too.
Who should attend? This session is likely to be of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about ‘Twitter’ and its practical uses in professional activities including staff development.
Course Content:
By the end of this workshop participants will have:
1 Been introduced to microblogging technology and the Twitter platform in the context of professional networking activities
2 Learned how to create a Twitter profile for professional activities
3 Explored the service and learned how to follow and find people to follow
4 Understand the use and function of hashtags
5 Been introduced to Twitter etiquette and lingo
6 Considered how Twitter can be used to enhance personal professional and service development
