Right. He was, and despite that disclaimer, he said it, which probably
speaks as loudly as the disclaimer. I in effect just threw in my tuppence
that the older usage suits m ear better.
And I musy say that "lax" is not necessarily pejorative to me, nor to most
dictionaries, so I don't think you need to take my "strict"/"lax" musings in
that spirit.
