The reason I prefer a stricter definition for poetry is that if it means
simply changing topic, it is worthless as a poetics term. The key to
the value of its use in The Wasteland is in describing a huge and
aesthetically significant discord. Using it strictly helps me as a
poetics taxonomist, too, for then I can use it to name a kind pf poetry
I consider significant, jump-cut poetry.
Not that it really matters. If people persist in using it loosely
(i.e., meaninglessly), then I can just make up a new
term--"shock-lurch," say. . . .
