Hi Sheila (and all)
I was taught (and teach) listening to the FHR with a pinnard prior to
starting a CTG. The rationale being that you have heard the actual
fetal heart yourself. It is possible to get a 'normal' CTG trace when
the baby is dead if the equipment is picking up maternal pulse and/or
interference. Using a doppler/sonicaid rather than a pinnard seems a
little pointless if the rationale is determining actual fetal heart
sounds. I'm interested in others thoughts and practice in this area.
