Dear Colleagues, please circulate these two opportunities to your relevant networks. With thanks.

AHRC project: ‘A History of Television for Women in Britain, 1947-1989’.

Studentship Opportunity at De Monfort University and Fellowship Post at the University of Warwick.

AHRC Studentship
De Montfort University - Department of Media, Film and Journalism.

Applications are invited for a fully funded (fees and maintenance) 3 year PhD based in the newly formed Cinema and Television History Research Centre within the Department of Media, Film and Journalism at De Montfort University . The successful applicant will be part of a team working on the AHRC funded project ‘A History of Television for Women’ in conjunction with the University of Warwick and will be supervised by Dr Helen Wood (with Dr Rachel Moseley).
The research project will explore how television addressed women in the period 1947-1989. The central objective is to illuminate a largely uncharted history of television produced for and watched by women in Britain during a period of significant industrial and social change. Working alongside a research fellow conducting archival research and Dr Rachel Moseley and Dr Helen Wheatley (University of Warwick), the successful candidate will undertake oral history research with women viewers of different generations about their memories of television and its role in their daily lives.
You will have a background in media studies, television studies, history or sociology, preferably with an interest in gender and social change. A Master’s degree in a related area is also desirable. Candidates with experience in qualitative interview techniques are encouraged, although this is not essential. The project offers an exceptional opportunity to work with a team of researchers in the emerging area of television history.
For an informal discussion of the PhD bursary contact Dr Helen Wood ([log in to unmask])
To obtain an application form please contact Anne McLoughlin ([log in to unmask]).
The closing date for applications is 14 May 2010, and interviews will take place week commencing 7 June 2010. The starting date of the project and studentship is 1 September 2010.

Research Fellow
University of Warwick - Department of Film and Television Studies
£27,319 - £35,646 pa

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a major new project funded by the AHRC. You will assist the project investigators (Dr Rachel Moseley, Dr Helen Wheatley, (University of Warwick) Dr Helen Wood (De Montfort University) in the successful execution of the project, undertaking original research to explore television programming made for and watched by women viewers during this significant period. You will explore the production culture, policies and decision-making which have produced television programming for women in Britain in the specified period. You will also reconstruct and analyse the programming itself, contributing to a project that aims to establish and protect that programming available in the archives. Your research will address some of the gaps in existing histories of British television and will involve substantial time working in written and audio-visual archives in Britain. There is scope within this project for you to develop your own research themes within the bounds of the project.

You will have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field, experience of conducting archival research and textual analysis of television programmes or similar, a developing profile of research publications, administrative experience or capabilities and a commitment to a feminist research agenda.
