Hi Janet, I totally agree and realised as soon as I had sent the email that I should have erased that opening line. In my copy it was by way of an abbreviation for whoever I was sending it to, before I inserted the actual name. My apologies to you and all the other people on the list, male and female. I find that "Dear sirs" really jars with me.
I have deliberately not used this form of address even in the most formal of circumstances since 1984 or earlier.
I think that it's time in the 21st century to include women in formal address, if one feels the need to be so formal.
