Hello,
Earlier this month I sent a posting asking how you kept Laptops secure (we were considering buying some for student use in the library only)
Here is a summary of responses;-
· Treat as a normal loan but keep students ID card so preventing them leaving the building
· Use secure cabinets to recharge http://www.lapcabby.co.uk/16v.php
· Logged into MyPC for specified time period
· Keep students cards
· 2 responses said that students were expected to sign an agreement (part of ICT Acceptable Use policy) that they would pay full replacement costs in case of loss / damage / theft
· Lap top issued for limited time
· Fines (£5+) for late return
· Security tagged - using normal book tag
· Engraved with college logo or UV security
· RFID tags
· Don't issue cables with lap tops so machine has limited life
· Locks - http://www.lapjacks.com/corporate/unis.html
Very few people reported problems with lap tops being stolen, lending laptops seems to be a popular and expanding service.
I asked what brand or make of laptops were used here is the list so far.
Macbook Pro
Samsung UMpc
Asus Eee pc
Acer
Thank you to all who responded, everyone was most generous with the amount of information sent, we have been able to bid for 16 laptops as a start and are looking forward to offering this service to our users and we have decided to allow students to take the machines out the library.
Regards,
Ani
