Hello all,
RE: my original query below. Thanks to all who responded. Had a
response from 6 academic libraries, 3 public libraries, NHS, and an
independent library. Shortened version of comments they made
below.....

"Buy if price comparable to ILL cost + will be 'of use' to other
readers"
"Buy if cant be got on ILL - charge faculty the cost of item above the
standard ILL price: did this as cost can be same/cheaper than ILL and
item is retained for own stock; saves time as ordering can be done by
credit card"
"Working out cost of ILL books + renewal cost + staff time +_ av.
Price - one inst, buys items which cost under £50; initially ran
requests past librarians but they didn't want to spend time on this so
are now just buying. Policy to be reviewed but cost threshold likely
to go down, some money saved as some items used repeatedly; 10%
however are unrelated to rest of stock and add no value to it"
"Have bought some items which were relevant to stock, would not do
this for non-relevant material"
"All requests for items published in last 5 yrs passed to librarians -
most are bought unless v.expensive"
"Purchase if item requested is less than £15, or if unavailable via
ILL. Buy less than a dozen a year this way"
"Consider if item meets stock criteria and buy if it does"
"Occasionally bought if we cant get a loan - passed by a librarian who
decides on purchase based on cost and value to stock, if item
expensive then more likely to buy items for
academics/researchers/postgrads than undergrads - sometimes its
cheaper to buy from Amazon than ILL"
"Do buy if item is new"
"Purchase might be quicker if supplier has item readily available -
but not if they don't tell you until the automatic cancellation kicks
in that they cant get it"
Those who did buy cited Amazon or ABE as where they got books and
often bought cheap second hand items via credit card rather than going
through normal suppliers

Subject: buying ILL requests?
Hello all,
Apologies if this is asked regularly as I haven't been on this list
for a while.
Does anyone out there generally buy items which are requested via ILL
and add them to stock rather than requesting an ILL ? What process do
you go through on making this decision - cost of item?/value to
stock?/ease of acquiring item etc
Does this method save any money/time?
Thanks,
Alan
