italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear Cinzia,
The Italian word is "grida" (pl. "gride"), 'decreto emanato
anticamente da autorità locali e portato a conoscenza del pubblico dal
banditore' (source: www.garzantilinguistica.it), different from
"grido" (pl. "grida"). The English translation is 'ban; edict;
proclamation'.
I have checked two English translations of the novel (1845: 30, and by
Bruce Penman, 1973: 35) and in both cases pl. "gride" is translated as
"proclamations".
Best,
Dario.
