I've worked it out!
The Conservative manifesto will include a pledge the patients will be
able to book routine appointments with their GPs 12 hours a day, 7 days
a week.
And I had thought that Andrew Langley had some understanding of the NHS
and general practice.
Presumably the calculation is that:-
1. the general public would like to be able to book appointments at
weekends (and Bank Holidays?) rather than upset the boss by taking
statutory time off.
2. they are stupid enough to believe it to be possible without a massive
increase in spending.
3. the loss of support from anyone associated with general practice will
be outweighed by the increase in support from the rest of the population
- and that the rest of the population will be convinced that this
extension of GP hours from 10.5 to 12 a day - and the addition of 2 days
a week (and Bank Holidays?) is deliverable.
It reminds me of the story about the Mid-West Senator who had made all
sorts of promises during the election campaign.
His aide came in to say his supporters were waiting to have his promises
fulfilled, and what should he say, and the senator said - "Tell them the
truth: I lied!"
There are now two parties whose policies are unsupportable.. ;-(
