Research Fellow, University of Surrey (Ref: 7523)
Salary: Up to £30,747 per annum
Applications are invited for a full time Research Fellow to work on the Bespoke project: Increasing social inclusion through community journalism and bespoke design. The post holder will be responsible for ethnographic studies on the project, examining community use of prototype systems and the role of community journalism in their design. The post is available for 10 months from 1st June 2010.
Fieldwork will be carried out in the Preston area, although the researcher will be based at Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey and supervised by Professor David Frohlich. Surrey is one of five universities involved in the project which is itself part of the Digital Economy research programme funded by the EPSRC: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/ResearchFunding/Programmes/DE/default.htm. This will involve collaboration with other groups, and travel to UK project and programme meetings.
The post would suit an applied anthropologist or sociologist with an interest in design. Candidates should have a first degree in sociology or anthropology. Candidates should also hold a second degree and a PhD (or near completion) in sociology, anthropology or a socio-technical systems field. The postholder will be required to have specialised training or research experience in ethnography, ideally as it applies to design.
Digital World Research Centre is a multidisciplinary research group doing user-centred research and innovation for the consumer market. For an informal discussion please contact Prof David Frohlich by telephone (01483 683973) or email ([log in to unmask])
