I hate to think what the Australian immigration would think we do, I always put Public Servant as I am generally too jet-lagged to be civil or coherent. However, I declared my true profession and I got through Homeland Security in the US very fast not long ago when I complemented the chap on the speed of searching the system for my previous record of entry into the USA (he proudly gave me some statistic about it searching something like 100 million iris images), but then asking what happens when the power goes out.
Having worked in records offices I quite like being asked whether we had 78's.

Dear Kate
Queuing up at Auckland Airport back in 1998, the NZ immigration official who took my passport asked me:
"What's an archivist? Do they build arches or something?"
I said yes, that's exactly what they did.

Susannah

Dear colleagues
I am talking to the Catholic Archives Society annual conference next month and have come up with this title. Obviously I have my own stories but if anyone has a particularly unusual or funny experience when trying to explain what they do I would be pleased to immortalise you! Needless to say, you can remain anonymous if you prefer.
Thanks
Kate
