GUY'S AND ST THOMAS' NHS FOUNDATION TRUST & KING'S COLLEGE LONDON'S
COMPREHENSIVE BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH CENTRE
BIOMEDICAL FORUM
Wednesday 5th May 2010: 13.00-14.00
Next month's biomedical forum provides an opportunity to listen to a world expert on Bayesian statistics and adaptive designs.
Professor Don Berry from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston will deliver a lecture entitled
"Adaptive designs and personalised medicine in clinical trials"
Abstract:
Adaptive clinical trials have become increasingly popular in drug development and translational research.
The goals are efficiency and accuracy. In particular, identifying which patients respond to which therapies can make for more rapid drug development. I will give special emphasis to biomarker-driven trials where the goal is to determine prospectively which patients benefit from which therapies. I-SPY 2 http://ispy2.org is an example. Many drugs and combinations are considered across a variety of biomarker categories.
Because of the multiplicities involved, false positives abound. The problem is to distinguish them from true positives. It can be done. And indeed, solving this problem is essential if we are to move at more than a snail's pace along the road to personalized medicine.
This public lecture is open to everyone. It will take place in Lecture Theatre 1, New Hunt's House, Guy's Hospital.
