MSc in Modern Epidemiology (Biostatistics) in the School of Public
Health, Imperial College London
We are pleased to be able to offer a newly created Biostatistics Option
in the MSc in Modern Epidemiology beginning 3 October 2010. This
Master’s degree will be available to students who follow a biostatistics
pathway, led by Professor Sylvia Richardson, within an internationally
recognised Master’s programme. We are seeking highly-motivated,
outstanding scholars with a relevant degree in mathematics, statistics
or a related quantitative subject. Interested applicants are encouraged
to apply as soon as possible. Medical Research Council studentships may
be available.
Students taking this intellectually challenging Master’s course will
develop a critical understanding of epidemiology and biostatistics and
they will acquire the expertise and practical skills required for
research in modern epidemiology and biostatistics.
In Term 1 all MSc students follow a core pathway of teaching that draws
directly on on-going, leading national and international research within
the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Infectious Disease
Epidemiology at St Mary’s Campus. Core teaching includes
epidemiological study design; biostatistical methods in epidemiology;
environmental epidemiology, evolution and control of infectious disease.
In Term 2 students following the Biostatistics pathway will take courses
in Survival analysis, Genetic epidemiology offered to all MSc students.
In addition, they will be offered four 5-day specialised modules
including:
-Bayesian Statistical Modelling (5 days)
-Multilevel modelling (5 days)
-Methods for Spatial Epidemiology (5 days)
-Topics in Biostatistics (5 days)
All modules are accompanied by practical sessions where students analyse
data using R or Winbugs.
In Term 3 and throughout the summer months individual research projects
are carried out under supervision. There are opportunities for external
projects with other universities, research institutions and health trusts.

Note: the course is studied full-time over one calendar year commencing
in October or part-time over three years. Students will register under
the umbrella title of MSc in Modern Epidemiology, and students may, if
they wish, elect to be awarded the broader title of MSc in Modern
Epidemiology without reference to specialisation.
