Great Dixter House and Gardens
Northiam, near Rye, East Sussex
Archivist
£23 -£25,000 per annum, 18 month contract
The Great Dixter Charitable Trust is looking for an archivist to work as part of a team of gardeners, educationalists and curators. The trust is running a conservation project to preserve, catalogue and interpret the history of this famous garden and Medieval/Arts and Crafts house. The archives contain significant architectural, gardening and social history material.
The archivist will arrange storage, conservation and search facilities for the collections balancing this with the continued use of the house as a home. The post involves the creation of a catalogue, based on the recommendations of a recently commissioned archives management plan. Some of this will be carried out with the help of volunteers.
We need a qualified archivist with knowledge of electronic cataloguing systems and understanding of preventative conservation. An interest in small scale records management programmes and historic house collections would be useful. Recently qualified archivists will be considered and training offered where appropriate.
The post is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Foyle Foundation.
