Dear all
I am trying to investigate the role that women played as writers in Welsh theatre during the period 1900 -1945. Although I am primarily interested in English language writers it would be good to know if there were any women writers in either of the region's languages. Or any from a slightly earlier / later period as this in itself helps build up a picture of how different periods encourage or discourage women's involvement . And the definition of a Welsh writer for these purposes does not have to be restricted.
My early investigations into Irish writers seems to indicate that women are most active in the theatre during times of change or political upheaval. They were then encouraged back into the role of homemaker during periods of social stability. (Sounds like a familiar pattern in most public work spheres). This allowed women to continue in their contribution to poetry and fiction but hindered their involvement with the theatre. Is this a pattern that is reflected in Welsh theatre? Or were they not allowed to make their mark at all?
Can anyone give me any leads or suggestions?
Many thanks for putting your thinking caps on.
regards
