Following on from the success of Raising the Bar 2008, this year's Raising the Bar Conference focuses on addressing your development needs, whether your aim is 'raising the bar' for yourself or your service, or both, while providing excellent peer networking opportunities. The Conference stars with keynote speaker, Maxine Miller, one of 50 "Women to Watch" in the Cultural Leadership Programme 2010, followed by small-group interactive workshops delivered by experienced and engaging facilitators who will encourage learning through participation and sharing of professional experiences.

11.15 - 12.30 Opening Session: This highly interactive session will provide you with the opportunity to meet new contacts, build professional relationships and get to know, like and learn from others with a view to gaining new skills and understanding. Come prepared to join in, share and have fun with your peers. The Group will be divided in 3 breakout groups for part of this session. It is up to you to decide on the day which breakout group to join from the following:
-"The Magic Rope" will lead you to discuss embracing change V. resistance to change, and whatever falls in between. It is aimed at those who are either facing imposed change or leading and implementing change, and will help you to understand human behaviour in relation to change.
- "The Magic Lamp" will lead you to think about and discuss things you would actively like to change at work. It is aimed at those who are either brave enough to choose change or who would like to exert greater influence within their organisation.
-"The Magic Word" will lead you to think and discuss around the idea "We learn something when things go right; we learn twice as much when things go wrong". It is aimed at those who believe the Magic Word to learning and development is "WRONG", and feel confident enough to share their WRONG experiences with the Group as a positive learning technique.
12.30-13.30 Lunch
13.30- 14.30 Parallel Sessions 1
A) "Managing the Waves of Change"
The one thing that can be said is that Change is constant and like the sea we could be sailing a millpond, a moderate swell or a tidal wave. Without an active guidance system in operation for any of these conditions we could end up in uncharted waters. This session will provide an opportunity to interactively identify best practice when managing change.
Facilitator: Julie Hogbin, Senior Trainer/Coach, LEVELheaded
Julie has worked with LEVELheaded for the last 6 years and has specialised within the Management and Leadership field. LEVELheaded's mission is to work with organisations whose primary purpose is to make the world a better place. LEVELheaded's passion is to support organisations to create the greatest measurable and sustainable impact. To this end Julie has worked across the sector with Leaders and Managers at all levels, from Trustees to individuals considering making the move into Management.
Julie has worked within learning and development in both the public and private sectors for 18 years in total. The three years before joining LEVELheaded were spent as an independent trainer working with organisations such as The Co-operative Group, Pricewaterhouse Coopers and The Department of Work and Pensions.
B) "Using Web 2.0 to Build a Professional Network: Ning, LinkedIn, and the Social Web to Maximise Performance"
Not sure how to join your peers in closed and open online networks, share and disseminate your work, or market and manage your online self using tools designed to make the whole process straightforward and accessible? This practical workshop will demonstrate how to build an online profile to communicate, collaborate and contribute to professional developments in the library and information sector, helping you to maximise your online communication, information-sharing and networking, to become a more effective professional.
Facilitators: James Smith, Electronic Information Librarian, Sunderland Public Libraries & Nick Stopforth, Library and Information Officer, Newcastle City Library
James is the Electronic Information Librarian for Sunderland Public Libraries, with a responsibility to use technology to improve and develop library services. Originally studying in film and media he has taken this approach combined with interests in web design and web based technology into the library world. He has worked in public libraries for 9 years and is a keen believer in the ethos and evolution of public libraries
Nick is a Library and Information Officer working for Newcastle Libraries, based in the new city library, and has worked in public libraries for 9 years. As part of the Information and Digital staff team, Nick contributes to the development of Web2.0 services in Newcastle Libraries, has developed a portfolio of Web2.0-based profiles (facebook, twitter, blog etc.), and has worked on several projects involving wikis and podcasting
C) "Let's be Creative"
"There are no problems - only opportunities to be creative." Dorye Roettger. We are born creative, yet somehow (perhaps through our education system?) many of us think we have lost the ability to be creative and innovative. But it is still inside us and there are techniques that help us overcome our fear of being 'wrong' and to be creative. This interactive session will introduce you to a simple and effective technique in creative thinking that can be used in a variety of contexts.
Facilitator: Jacquie Kelly, Senior Adviser, JISC infoNet
Jacquie is a Senior Adviser with JISC infoNet having joined at the start of the service in January 2003. Responsibilities include developing online materials, delivering workshops and liaison with JISC-funded programmes and services, in e-learning and Learning Space Design. She was employed in the IT industry for 6 years prior to moving into the education sector.
14.30 - 15.00 Tea & Networking
15.00 - 16.00 Parallel Sessions 2:
D) "Scenario Planning: Thinking the Unthinkable"
How do we plan for an unpredictable future? Scenario planning is a highly creative and engaging process which assumes that the future can differ
greatly from what we know today. Scenarios provide alternative views of the future and the process involves imagining how you and your
organisation might look in these futures. This interactive session will give you a taster of the scenario planning process and how it might be
useful to you.
Facilitator: Helen Blanchett, Consultant Trainer, JISC Netskills
Helen is a Consultant Trainer at JISC Netskills, an advisory service that helps individuals and organisations to make effective use of innovative technology. E) "Brand the "Beep" Out of Yourself":
"Today, in the Age of the Individual, you have to be your own brand. For anyone who's interested in what it takes to stand out and prosper in the
new world of work our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You." (Tom Peters, 'The brand called You'). Personal and
professional development is often based on the concept of self-improvement; personal branding is about self-improvement and self-packaging.
This interactive session will give you tips on understanding exactly who you are, what you're capable of and where you want to go. This will enable
you to create an authentic personal brand for personal, professional and service development.

development services have been used by organisations as diverse as Specsavers, McDonalds, McDermott, Will and Emery, the Museums
Development Association, Breast Cancer Care, CILIP, Purina, The Housing Corporation and Hemsley Fraser.
F) "Keeping your Team on the Crest of the Wave: Using Coaching in a Leadership Role":
Leading a team is more than just directing. Often to get the most from people we need to use coaching skills to help people change work patterns, attitudes and develop skills. Real leadership, in our rapidly changing work environments, often means helping your team to make a paradigm shift and coaching skills can help you achieve this. This module will look briefly at some of the skills and techniques you can employ to make coaching a real work skill.
